First Minister of Scotland Visits Pioneering Carbon Removal Facility in Crofthead

John Swinney at Crofthead Dec 2024

Crofthead, Dumfries, Scotland, 9th December 2024 – The First Minister of Scotland, John Swinney, today visited a pioneering carbon capture facility in Crofthead, Dumfries, operated by The Carbon Removers. The visit highlighted Scotland’s leadership in engineered carbon removals, a critical part of the country’s strategy to combat climate change and achieve its net-zero goals.

The Carbon Removers is at the forefront of transitioning from utilising captured CO2 to focusing on its permanent removal. By developing its proprietary capture technology and working with transportation and sequestration partners, the company aims to store captured CO2 in building aggregates and geological storage, creating a scalable, permanent solution for reducing atmospheric carbon. This transition positions The Carbon Removers as a key player in Scotland’s push to lead in carbon removal innovation and the development and creation of high-quality carbon removal credits for organisations that have made net-zero commitments.

The visit, held in collaboration with South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE), underscored the economic and environmental importance of fostering sustainable industries that support both local communities and global climate goals.

Speaking at the event, the First Minister, John Swinney, said:
“Scotland can be a world leader in the green transition, and carbon removal is a vital part of that journey. It is inspiring to see companies like The Carbon Removers leading the way in delivering permanent carbon solutions. By focusing on carbon removal, they are helping Scotland tackle the climate crisis while creating opportunities for future generations.

“The Scottish Government is working to end Scotland’s contribution to global emissions by 2045. That’s why the Scottish Budget 2025-26 proposes a record £4.9 billion in funding to accelerate our transition to net zero and tackle climate change and biodiversity loss, including £25 million to support the creation of new jobs in the green energy supply chain here in Scotland.”

Prof. Russel Griggs OBE, Chair of SOSE, said:
“We have worked closely with The Carbon Removers from the beginning of their journey and are delighted to see the exciting progress they have made, which is currently taking them into new international markets. With the South of Scotland now being the nation’s Natural Capital Innovation Zone, we see companies such as The Carbon Removers as vital to helping drive forward innovation and also helping attract responsible investment to benefit our region, and the rest of Scotland “

Richard Nimmons, CEO of The Carbon Removers, said:
“We are honoured to welcome the First Minister to our facility at this exciting stage in our company’s journey. By focusing on permanent carbon removal through mineralisation, we are not just addressing today’s climate challenges but creating a sustainable pathway for the future. Our work aims to ensure CO2 is permanently removed from the atmosphere, supporting industries and governments in their shared goal of a net-zero world.”

The transition to permanent carbon removal represents a major step forward for Scotland’s ambitions to lead in engineered climate solutions. The Carbon Removers continues to collaborate with partners across industries and governments to deliver innovative and scalable technologies that advance global decarbonisation efforts.
