Making the intangible tangible: tracking CO₂ every step of the way

At The Carbon Removers Removers, we capture biogenic carbon from Scotch distilleries then transport it to our mineralisation partners, O.C.O Technology Ltd, where the gas will be stored durably in construction materials.  In just a few months, we will be capturing biogenic carbon from biogas plants in Scandinavia, and transporting it by truck, then a specially fitted ship, all the way to the Greensand Future off shore platform in the North Sea, to be injected deep under the seabed for safe and permanent sequestration.  And what is really important is that, every step of the way, each molecule of CO₂  is accounted for.  We need a verified, auditable data trail, it’s critical to building trust in a still-nascent carbon removal market.

We make the intangible tangible through the data stream — Sanjay Parekh, CCO, The Carbon Removers

Measuring every molecule, every step of the way

Our MRV system tracks carbon from the moment it leaves our tanks, at the distillery or biogas plants.  It gets scanned for quality, measured, and when the truck driver comes to pick it up, he uses a QR code from our system to record the data which is then logged automatically. The driver issues and records a report that comes out of the scanner with weight and quality. That process is repeated all along the process up to permanent storage.

Each step includes tracking codes, weight records, digital forms, and photographic documentation, all logged in digitally, from capture at the source, to internal processing, transport, quality scanning, and final storage.

Beyond physical tracking, we monitor energy use and all data needed for full lifecycle analysis (LCA). This level of granularity allows us to quantify net CO₂ removed = total amount of carbon dioxide permanently removed from the atmosphere, after accounting for all emissions involved in capturing, transporting, and storing that CO₂- e.g. electricity usage, vehicle fuel etc.

Our Digital Backbone: Mangrove Systems and Isometric

To streamline all this complex flux of data, we partner with Mangrove Systems, a best-in-class MRV software platform.

We were very keen to avoid Excel spreadsheets or manual reconciliation and they’ve provided us with a system which organises all that data in an auditable manner that can be trusted. It acts as the digital layer above our physical operations and automates data capture and workflows. — Sanjay Parekh, CCO, The Carbon Removers

Our verified data is transmitted to Isometric and Puro.earth, independent registries that apply rigorous, peer-reviewed standards. They also oversee third-party audits that assess our data against established methodologies. If all criteria are met, carbon credits are issued to clients, in our case companies such as British Airways, Autotrader or NatWest Group.

Minimised uncertainty, maximised impact

We reconcile our MRV data weekly, ensuring no more than a week of operations goes untracked. Instead of relying on traditional volume buffers, we use real-time data, operational precision, and flexible delivery windows to meet our commitments.

Digital MRV is at the heart of what we do : not just a box to tick, but the backbone of our integrity. With partners like Mangrove Systems  and Isometric, we’re helping define the ultimate standard for verifiable carbon removal.

MRV is essential for everyone involved

This process is core to our business enabling us to demonstrate our Real net positive impact.

It’s also essential for our partners and suppliers, from Whyte and Mackay, to OCO, our Mineralisation partners, or INEOS in Scandinavia – their operations feed into the same data system, ensuring accuracy across the entire value chain.

And most importantly, it matters to our customers: We provide them with the peace of mind and the proof that carbon has been removed from the atmosphere on their behalf, safely and permanently.
