The Carbon Removers Join Launch of New Nordic Carbon Removal Association, Backing Scandinavia’s Role as Climate Innovation Hub

Scottish startup expands into Denmark with commitment to short-distance, permanent carbon removal built on local partnerships

Edinburgh / Copenhagen – 3d June 2025

The Carbon Removers, a Scottish startup specialised in removing and permanently storing biogenic carbon in the UK and Denmark, is joining the Nordic Carbon Removal Association (NCRA) as a founding member, supporting the Association’s launch on June 3rd at the Danish Chamber of Commerce in Copenhagen. The move marks a significant step in the company’s commitment to scaling local, high-integrity permanent carbon removal projects across Scandinavia.

Short Supply Chains, Permanent Storage

The Carbon Removers focus on capturing biogenic CO₂ from fermentation industries and biogas plants. Their model is local by design: carbon is captured and permanently sequestered close to the source, minimising transport and reducing costs.

“Building short, local value chains is core to our business model,” says CEO Richard Nimmons. “In the UK, we work with whisky distilleries and store CO₂ through mineralisation. In Denmark, we work with biogas plants and will be injecting the CO₂ deep under the North Sea in partnership with Greensand Future operated by Ineos Energy.”

First UK Company to Partner with Greensand Future

In December 2024, The Carbon Removers became the first UK company to sign an agreement with Greensand Future, the EU’s first operational CO₂ storage site. This partnership will see 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ per annum permanently stored in a depleted oil field beneath the Danish North Sea beginning in 2025.

Denmark: A Natural Fit for Biogenic CDR

The company’s expansion into Denmark builds on the country’s leadership in biomethane production and its rich supply of agricultural waste, particularly manure from dairy and pig farming. This enables large-scale carbon removal while also mitigating methane emissions from untreated manure.

A Growing Nordic Movement for Carbon Removal

The Carbon Removers’ NCRA membership reflects growing momentum to make the Nordics a global hub for high-quality permanent carbon removal. As the NCRA unveils its strategic blueprint for scaling removals across the region, The Carbon Removers offer a proven model for immediate deployment and access to high-integrity carbon credits, supporting climate conscious companies in meeting their climate goals today.

About The Carbon Removers
The Carbon Removers capture biogenic CO₂ from fermentation industries such as biogas plants and store it permanently through offshore geological storage or via mineralisation. Founded by brothers Ed and Richard Nimmons, the company operates in the UK and Denmark and is expecting to scale to a million tons of carbon removal per annum by the early 2030s.

About the Nordic Carbon Removal Association (NCRA)
NCRA is a new trade association uniting Nordic stakeholders to build a thriving carbon removal industry. Its mission is to drive policy, market development, and implementation of high-integrity carbon removal across the region.
